Dental Partials in Rexburg, ID — A Practical Solution for Missing Teeth

Missing a few teeth changes more than just the way your smile looks. It affects how you chew, how you speak, and over time, how your remaining teeth shift. A partial denture is one of the most practical ways to fill those gaps — without surgery, without a long timeline, and without a major investment.

At Family First Dental in Rexburg, we fit removable partial dentures that look natural, feel comfortable, and hold up to everyday use.

What Is a Dental Partial?

A partial denture — often just called a partial — is a removable appliance that replaces one or more missing teeth. It attaches to your remaining natural teeth using metal or tooth-colored clasps, filling the gap and restoring your bite. Unlike full dentures, which replace all the teeth on an arch, partials are used when you still have healthy teeth remaining.

Why Replacing Missing Teeth Matters

It’s easy to put off replacing a back tooth — especially if no one can see it. But leaving gaps causes real problems over time:

  • Adjacent teeth drift and tilt into the empty space
  • Bone loss accelerates in the area that no longer has a root
  • Your bite changes, putting stress on remaining teeth and the jaw joint
  • Chewing becomes harder, which affects what you’re able to eat

A partial denture prevents most of these issues while restoring your smile and function.

Partial Dentures vs. Dental Implants

Both are solid options for replacing missing teeth — but they’re different in terms of cost, timeline, and what’s involved. Partials are removable, don’t require surgery, and can be made relatively quickly. Dental implants are permanent, feel more like natural teeth, and are the closest thing to replacing the actual root.

For some patients, implants are the ideal long-term solution. For others — due to cost, health factors, or personal preference — a partial denture is the right choice. Dr. Stout will help you understand both options without pressure.

Getting Fitted at Family First Dental

The process typically involves two to three appointments. If any remaining teeth need to come out first, a tooth extraction can be scheduled as part of the same overall treatment plan. From there, we take impressions and bite measurements, your partial is custom-fabricated, and you come in for a try-in to check fit and appearance. Adjustments are made until the partial feels natural and comfortable. Most patients adapt within a few weeks.

Dr. Stout Builds Partials That Actually Fit

A partial that doesn’t fit well is uncomfortable, hard to chew with, and won’t stay in place. Dr. Craig Stout has fitted partials for patients across eastern Idaho for nearly 20 years. He takes the time to get the impressions right and makes adjustments until the fit is solid and the partial functions the way it should.

Questions About Dental Partials

What is the difference between partials and full dentures?

A partial replaces one or more missing teeth while your remaining natural teeth stay in place. A full denture replaces all the teeth on an arch. Partials attach to existing teeth using clasps; full dentures rest on the gum tissue.

How long do partial dentures last?

With proper care, a partial denture can last 5 to 10 years or longer. Over time, your mouth changes and the partial may need relining or replacement to maintain a proper fit.

Do dental partials hurt?

New partials often require adjustment — some soreness is normal at first as your mouth adapts. If you experience ongoing pain, come in for an adjustment. A properly fitting partial should not be painful to wear.

Can you sleep with a partial denture?

Most dentists recommend removing partials at night to give your gum tissue a rest and to clean both the partial and your mouth. Sleeping in a partial increases the risk of tissue irritation and bacterial buildup.
