Tooth Extractions

Tooth Extractions in Rexburg, ID — When Removing a Tooth Is the Right Call

Most people don’t want to hear that a tooth needs to come out. That’s completely understandable. But when a tooth is too far gone to save, removing it quickly can stop pain, prevent infection from spreading, and protect the teeth around it.

At Family First Dental, Dr. Craig Stout always looks for a way to save your tooth first. If removal turns out to be the right call, he’ll make sure the process is as smooth and comfortable as it can be.

Simple and Surgical Extractions

Not all extractions are the same. Understanding the difference can help you know what to expect.

A simple extraction removes a tooth that has fully grown in and is visible above the gum line. Dr. Stout loosens the tooth and lifts it out. Most simple extractions take about 20 to 40 minutes, including numbing time.

A surgical extraction is used when a tooth is broken at the gum line, hasn’t fully come in, or is impacted, like many wisdom teeth. This type takes longer and may involve a small incision. Dr. Stout will walk you through what’s needed before he begins.

Either way, the area will be fully numbed before anything starts. You shouldn’t feel pain during the procedure. If you’re feeling anxious, tell Dr. Stout. He can talk through what to expect and make sure you feel ready to go.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Dr. Stout always tries to save a tooth before recommending removal. But there are situations where pulling a tooth is the best path forward:

  • Severe decay that has destroyed too much of the tooth structure
  • Infection that hasn’t responded to antibiotics or a root canal
  • A tooth broken below the gum line that can’t be restored
  • Impacted wisdom teeth causing pain, crowding, or recurring infection
  • Crowding that needs to be addressed before orthodontic treatment

If you’ve been dealing with ongoing tooth pain or been told a tooth may need to come out, contact our office to schedule an appointment. Dr. Stout will take X-rays and give you an honest assessment of your options.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Recovery is manageable when you follow the aftercare instructions Dr. Stout’s team provides. Here’s a general idea of what to plan for:

  • Bite down gently on gauze for 30 to 45 minutes after the procedure to help a clot form
  • Stick to soft foods for the first 24 to 48 hours: yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes
  • Avoid straws, smoking, and spitting for at least 24 hours — these can dislodge the clot
  • Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed, or use a prescription if Dr. Stout provides one
  • Keep the area clean, but don’t brush directly on the extraction site the first day

Most people feel back to normal within a few days. If pain gets worse after day two, or you notice a bad taste in your mouth, call the office right away. That can be a sign of dry socket, which is treatable if you catch it early.

Replacing Your Missing Tooth

After an extraction, the space left behind can cause nearby teeth to shift over time. Replacing the tooth helps protect your bite and keeps your smile intact.

Family First Dental offers several tooth replacement options:

  • Dental implants are the most natural-feeling replacement. They function just like a real tooth and help preserve the bone in your jaw.
  • Dentures are a good fit if multiple teeth are missing. We offer partial and full dentures depending on your situation.

Dr. Stout will talk through your replacement options so you can make an informed decision when you’re ready.

Questions About Tooth Extractions

How long does a tooth extraction take?

Simple extractions typically take 20 to 40 minutes including numbing time. Surgical extractions take longer. Dr. Stout will give you a realistic estimate before starting.

What can I eat after a tooth extraction?

Stick to soft foods for the first 24 to 48 hours: yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes. Avoid hard or crunchy foods and straws for at least 24 hours to protect the clot.

How do I know if I need a tooth pulled?

Common reasons include severe decay that cannot be saved, infection that has not responded to treatment, a broken tooth below the gum line, or an impacted wisdom tooth. Dr. Stout always explores whether the tooth can be saved first.

What is dry socket?

Dry socket occurs when the blood clot after an extraction is dislodged or dissolves before the site heals. It causes significant pain. We provide aftercare instructions to prevent it and can treat it quickly if it develops.
