Dental Fillings

Dental Fillings in Rexburg, ID — Fast, Tooth-Colored Repairs That Last

Cavities happen. They’re one of the most common dental problems people deal with — and there’s no reason to feel bad about it. What matters is getting it fixed before it turns into something bigger.

At Family First Dental, we use tooth-colored composite fillings that match your natural teeth. No silver patches. No metal. Just a strong, seamless repair that blends right in — and most people won’t even notice it’s there.

Why You Shouldn't Wait on a Cavity

Cavities don’t stop growing on their own. A small one that’s easy to fix today can get deep enough to need a dental crown — or even root canal treatment — if you let it sit. And the bigger the fix, the more it costs.

Most dental fillings take 30 to 60 minutes and aren’t nearly as scary as people expect. We numb the area first, and a lot of patients are surprised by how straightforward the whole thing is.

Tooth-Colored Fillings — What We Use and Why

We use composite resin at Family First Dental. Here’s why that matters to most patients:

  • They blend naturally with your tooth color — back and front teeth alike
  • They bond directly to the tooth, which often means we remove less healthy structure
  • No mercury or metal components — just a durable, biocompatible material
  • Shaped and polished in the chair — no temporary work, no second visits for the filling itself

What Happens at Your Appointment

Getting a filling at Family First Dental is pretty simple:

  • We numb the area — you’ll feel pressure but not pain
  • We remove the decayed portion of the tooth
  • We apply and shape the composite resin to match your bite
  • We cure it with a special light to harden it in place
  • We check your bite and polish everything smooth

You can eat normally once the numbing wears off — usually within a couple of hours.

What About Old Fillings?

Composite fillings typically hold up for 5 to 10 years, sometimes longer with good care. At your regular dental cleaning appointments, Dr. Stout checks for fillings that are cracking, wearing down, or starting to fail. It’s much easier to replace a failing filling while it’s still small than to deal with a broken tooth later.

Dr. Stout Keeps It Simple

Dr. Craig Stout has been fixing cavities in Rexburg for nearly 20 years. He’s efficient, direct, and won’t recommend more treatment than you actually need. If you’re nervous, let us know — a lot of patients are, and we know how to help you through it.

Questions About Dental Fillings

How long do tooth fillings last?

Composite fillings typically last 5 to 10 years, sometimes longer. Lifespan depends on bite force, whether you grind your teeth, and how well you maintain your hygiene. We check your fillings at every cleaning.

Do fillings hurt?

The procedure itself shouldn't hurt. We numb the area before we start, so you'll feel pressure but not pain. Mild sensitivity for a day or two afterward is normal and usually fades on its own.

Can a cavity heal without a filling?

Very early-stage decay can sometimes be slowed with fluoride and better hygiene before it breaks through the enamel. But once a cavity has fully formed, it needs to be treated. Waiting only gives it time to grow deeper.

What's the difference between composite and amalgam fillings?

Composite is tooth-colored and bonds directly to the tooth. Amalgam is the old silver metal material. We use composite at Family First Dental — it looks natural, requires less removal of healthy tooth structure, and performs well for most patients.
