Hearing that your child has a cavity can feel like bad news. It’s actually very common, and it’s very fixable. The key is treating it while it’s still small.
At Family First Dental, cavity treatment for kids is part of our pediatric dental care for ages 4 and up. We’re a family dental office, so your child is seen in the same place you are. Call (208) 400-9946 to book.
Parents often ask, “Why fix a tooth that’s going to fall out?” It’s a fair question. Baby teeth hold space for the adult teeth growing in under them. If a baby tooth is lost too early, nearby teeth can drift into the gap. The American Dental Association also notes that baby teeth help kids chew and speak.
A small cavity left alone can turn into a toothache or an infection. That’s a lot harder on your child than a quick filling.
For most cavities, a filling does the job. We use tooth-colored composite fillings. There’s no silver and no metal, so the filling blends in with your child’s tooth.
Here’s how a filling visit goes:
Your child can eat once the numbness wears off. Remind them not to chew on their cheek or lip while it’s still numb.
Dr. Stout will show you the X-ray on a big screen first. He won’t suggest more treatment than your child needs.
Every treatment room has a TV on the ceiling and wireless headphones. Your child can pick a show and settle in while we work.
Parents are always welcome in the room. Sit next to your child and hold their hand the whole time if it helps. We go at your child’s pace, and if they need a break, they get one.
Once a cavity is fixed, the goal is keeping new ones away. Dental sealants cover the deep grooves on back teeth, where many kids’ cavities start. A fluoride treatment helps make the whole tooth stronger.
A dental cleaning every six months lets us spot small problems early. A tiny cavity found early is a quick fix.
We work with Delta Dental, MetLife, Blue Cross, Guardian, DMBA, and more. We’ll check your benefits and go over the cost before we start. We don’t accept Medicaid.
Payment plans are available through Cherry and WellCredit.
We’re open Monday through Saturday. Monday and Tuesday appointments run until 7 PM, so you can come after school. Saturday hours are 8 AM to 1 PM.
We see kids starting around age 4 or 5, once they can sit through a short visit. For babies and toddlers, a specialty pediatric dentist is usually the better fit. We’re happy to point you to one.
