Wisdom Teeth Out, Close to Home

Wisdom teeth are your third molars. They’re the last teeth to come in, usually between ages 17 and 21. Some grow in straight and never cause trouble. Others get stuck under the gum or come in sideways.

At Family First Dental, Dr. Craig Stout removes wisdom teeth right here in our Rexburg office. He has 20 years of experience. He’ll take X-rays and give you an honest look at your options.

Call (208) 400-9946 to book a wisdom teeth check. We’re open Monday through Saturday.

Do Your Wisdom Teeth Need to Come Out?

Not every wisdom tooth has to go. A healthy tooth that grows in straight, and that you can brush and floss, can often stay. Teeth that stay should still be checked at your regular visits.

Removal makes more sense when a wisdom tooth is causing a problem, or is likely to soon. Here are common signs:

You can’t see most of this in a mirror. That’s why every visit starts with a picture.

See Your Own X-Rays Before You Decide

We use AI-assisted X-rays and show them on a large screen in your treatment room. You see what Dr. Stout sees, including where each wisdom tooth sits.

Patients mention this often in their reviews. You don’t have to just take our word for it.

What Happens on Removal Day

The area is fully numbed before anything starts. You’ll feel pressure, but you shouldn’t feel pain.

A wisdom tooth that has fully come in is often a simple extraction. Dr. Stout loosens the tooth and lifts it out. A tooth stuck under the gum needs a surgical extraction. It takes longer and may need a small opening in the gum. Dr. Stout will walk you through what’s needed before he begins. Our main page on simple and surgical extractions has more detail.

Recovery: The First Few Days

Most people feel back to normal within a few days. A few simple steps help you heal:

If the pain gets worse after day two, or you notice a bad taste, call us right away. That can be a sign of dry socket. It’s easy to treat when it’s caught early.

Getting ready to serve a mission? The Church no longer asks you to remove healthy wisdom teeth before you serve. Removal is now advised only when a tooth shows signs of disease or poses a real risk. You still need a dental exam, and we offer the missionary dental exam here in Rexburg.
