Mail-order aligner ads make a tempting pitch. Straighten your teeth from your couch for less money. No office visits. For students and young families watching every dollar, that pitch lands. Here’s what the ads leave out.
How Mail-Order Aligners Work
Mail-order companies send an impression kit to your home or scan your teeth at a retail shop. A remote provider you never meet approves a plan. Trays arrive by mail. Progress checks happen through photos you upload. No one examines your mouth in person before your teeth start moving.
Why That’s a Problem
Teeth aren’t just the part you see. Roots, bone, and gums all move with them. An in-person exam with X-rays checks whether your mouth is healthy enough for tooth movement. Untreated gum disease or hidden decay under aligners can turn a cosmetic project into a dental problem. The American Dental Association has warned against do-it-yourself teeth straightening for exactly this reason.
There’s also a support gap. When a tray doesn’t fit or a tooth won’t track, mail-order customers file a ticket. Patients at a dental office call and come in.
The Cautionary Tale
The largest mail-order aligner company shut down in December 2023. Customers who were mid-treatment lost their support overnight. Many were left holding trays with no provider attached to their case. Price matters, but so does knowing the office managing your teeth will still exist next year.
What In-Person Treatment Gets You
At our office, aligner treatment starts with an exam and imaging, not a mail kit. Dr. Stout checks your gum health and bite before anything moves. During treatment you get check-ins every 6 to 8 weeks, attachments and adjustments that mail-order systems can’t provide, and refinements at the end if teeth need extra help. Cost is a fair concern, and we don’t dodge it. We check your insurance coverage before treatment starts, and financing is available through Cherry and WellCredit. Ask us to run the numbers before you assume mail-order is the only affordable path.
